Trades outlook in Australia
A certain amount of tradespeople, especially those with great skill, a lot of experience, or difficult qualifications to acquire will always be in demand. That said, trades are subject to similar fluctuations in demand and supply as other workers in the economy.
According to the National Skills Commission, the Technicians And Trades Workers occupation group will face below-average employment growth in the years 2021-2026, though it will still outstrip most other categories, at 6.1%, equivalent to 108,600 new jobs. The report highlights the need for tradespeople to engage with Vocational Education and Training, as these new jobs mostly comprise of highly skilled trades roles requiring a Cert II or Cert III qualification.
Even so, Labourers will still experience 6.9% growth over the same period, meaning that the entire spectrum of trades are still experiencing growth over the next few years, even if it’s less than the historical average.
