The engineering industry is undergoing rapid change. In Australia, the sector is thriving through increased investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Globally, engineering is evolving with a focus on green practices and sustainable development. Renewable energy, smart cities, and sustainable infrastructure projects are on the rise. AI, robotics, and 3D printing all promise to transform the state of engineering, yet there are still significant skill and technology gaps that must be overcome to harness these emerging technologies.

Engineers Australia’s March 2022 Discussion Paper shows that only 8.2% of graduates in Australia graduate with an engineering qualification, which is low compared to Germany at 24.2% and Japan at 18.5%.

Finding and retaining qualified engineers is hence the main obstacle for companies, and the industry as a whole – particularly female candidates and people from diverse backgrounds. While this number is steadily rising, these groups will be a key factor in driving the sector forward.
